Merkel visits Syrian refugees in Turkey amid tension over EU migrant deal



German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Turkey on Saturday to see how Syrian refugees are being treated and to try to soothe tensions over the EU-Turkish migrant deal. Arriving at Gaziantep near the Syrian border, she was met by Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. 
Amid a ramped up security presence, Merkel, EU Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans visited a local refugee camp.

In Nepal life goes on, but recovery is slow



Nepal is remembering the victims of the deadly, twin earthquakes which battered the country almost a year ago.
More than 9,000 people died and almost a million homes were damaged when two huge tremors struck within the space of 17 days. Life is still far from normal.

Germany: Huge protest against EU-US trade deal on eve of Obama visit



Tens of thousands of protesters marched in the German city of Hanover on Saturday to denounce a proposed EU-US free trade deal - on the eve of a visit by US President Obama who insists the pact would bring massive benefits.
Critics warn that it could drive down wages, undermine consumer rights and environmental protection.

Obama urges young Britons to reject isolationism and xenophobia



Barack Obama called on young Britons to reject xenophobia and not to pull back from the world on Saturday, a day after warning the UK about the risks of voting to leave the EU.
The US President was given a rock star welcome by more than 500 young British people at a 'town hall' style question and answer event in London.
"We see new calls for isolationism, for xenophobia," Obama said.
"When I speak to young people, I implore them, and I implore you, to reject those calls to pull back."

US Justice Department drops iPhone unlocking case against Apple



The US Department of Justice has dropped a potentially precedent-setting case against Apple.
Prosecutors were attempting to force the tech giant to help unlock an iPhone they said could provide helpful information pertaining to a drug lawsuit.
Someone has now given the authorities the phone's pass code.

Longest ever Mexico-California drug tunnel unearthed



United States Federal agents have seized about one ton of cocaine and six tons of marijuana. 
The stash had been smuggled through a newly discovered tunnel stretching beneath the border between Mexico and the US state of California. 
At 800 meters, it is longest such passageway unearthed.

No casualties reported after huge chemical blaze in Jiangsu, China



At least 90 fire engines and 500 firefighters struggled to put out a blaze at a chemical storage facility in China's eastern Jiangsu province. 
State media reported the building caught fire after an explosion earlier in the day.
Authorities said there were no casualties.

At least 16 people killed after heavy rain triggers landslide in India



Search and rescue operations were underway on Friday (April 22) in northeastern India after a landslide killed at least 16 people in the early hours of the morning, local media reported army officials as saying.

Volkswagen emission cheating costs rise to more than €16bn



Volkswagen has announced it will be putting aside €16.2 billion to help pay for its emissions scandal, more than double the €6.7 billion it told shareholders it would be allocating last year.

The announcement came as the German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said that car makers, including Porsche, Mercedes Benz and Opel would recall around 630,000 cars to fix the emissions management software.
