UK prisons plagued by violence, squalor & self-harm amid continued govt cuts

Violence has reached new heights in prisons across England and Wales, as increasing numbers of jails are characterized by staff cuts, overcrowding and failed rehabilitation practices, Britain’s chief inspector of prisons warns. In his annual report published on Tuesday, Nick Hardwick said too many jails in Britain are “places of violence, squalor and idleness.”
Citing official state statistics, the report revealed there were over 15,000 assaults in men’s prisons in England and Wales in 2014 - the highest figure in a decade.

Woman changes legal name to 'stupid' Facebook pseudonym to unlock account

A UK woman whose Facebook account was locked down over the use of a pseudonym changed her legal name accordingly to get it back. Jemma Rogers, a holistic therapist from Lewisham in southeast London, joined the social network in 2008. But not wishing to be annoyed by friend requests from real-world acquaintances, she used the pseudonym Jemmaroid Von Laalaa, British media report.
Last month Facebook, which demands that users only use their real names, asked Rogers to provide an ID for ‘von Laalaa’ to verify her account. She failed, although she admits she tried to Photoshop her bank cards to produce 'proof' for Facebook. Her account was suspended, and in a desperate move to get it back Rogers decided to change her legal name to Jemmaroid Von Laalaa via deed poll. Ironically, the 30-year-old is still locked out even after all her troubles, with a robot program responding that her situation is being looked into.

Children affected by family violence even before birth

Domestic violence can harm babies even before birth due to them being “exquisitely sensitive” to their parents’ suffering, Australian medical experts told Australia's first royal commission into domestic violence. The fear of possible harm makes the woman’s body release hormones that are capable of permeating the placenta and affecting the baby’s development in utero, which can cause severe consequences for pregnancy, the Guardian reported.

Putin inks law on rating agencies’ activities in Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law regulating the activity of ratings agencies in Russia, as discontent over ‘politicized’ actions of the Western Big Three – S&P, Moody’s and Fitch – is growing. The document sets a basic definition of rating activity, and its terms in Russia define the procedure for accreditation of rating agencies, RIA Novosti reported on Tuesday. Under the new law "legal entities established in the legal form of business entity have the right to exercise the rating activity on the territory of the Russian Federation," after the Russian Central Bank puts information about them in the register of credit rating agencies. It also establishes the minimum amount of equity for rating agency at $880,000 (50 million rubles). The Central Bank of Russia will carry out the accreditation of rating agencies. It will maintain the rating agencies register, carry out inspections, direct orders along with other enforcement actions.

Jade Helm 15: What you need to know about 7-state Pentagon super-drill

The US Army calls Jade Helm 15, which begins on Wednesday, a “routine” exercise, but Texans are forming militias to prevent what they fear is an imposition of martial law, and even Chuck Norris is running scared. RT sorts the truth from the myths.
Running for eight weeks between July 15 and September 15 Jade Helm 15 will unite SEALS, Green Berets and other special forces for a series of unconventional warfare exercises – with military analysts speculating it simulates operations against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in the Middle East, or even alleged Russia's involvement in eastern Ukraine.

Inside Story: Can Kuwait justify mandatory DNA testing?

Kuwait has been jolted into taking drastic measures to improve security. A new law has been passed for mandatory DNA testing of its more than four million citizens and foreign residents. It's the first country in the world to make testing compulsory for its entire population. Those who refuse risk a big fine and a year in jail. Kuwait's parliament took swift action following the bombing of a Shia Muslim mosque on June 26, which killed 26 worshippers in Kuwait City. Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) said they carried out the attack. Kuwait’s mandatory DNA testing would be illegal in Europe, where the Court of Human Rights ruled that Britain's so-called "blanket and indiscriminate" storage of DNA data violated the right to privacy. So can countries balance the need for security and privacy?
