Google Glass a controllo mentale: la telecinesi è realtà

Telecinesi o ennesima follia americana?

A New York passerelle sempre più hi tech

Passerelle a NY

Pistorius , sentenza aggiornata a venerdì mattina.

Spain is Africa's animal-trafficking gateway to Europe

Animals commerce
One terrified little monkey was found inside a tourist’s handbag during a routine airline carry-on luggage search, concealed with her tiny arms and legs strapped to her body with plastic. Another two chimpanzees lived locked in a dingy basement for more than 10 years.
Today, these victims of Europe’s illegal wild animal trade amble happily around the shady enclosures of the Primadomus Spain primate rescue center, nestled in a small valley protected by low mountains that create a natural oasis of green in Spain’s hot and dusty southeast.
The unassuming 450-acre complex, built six years ago near the small city of Villena and home to more than 60 primates rescued from abuse and neglect, has become a key player in the fight to halt illegal animal trading through the Iberian Peninsula.

'Comfort women' who serviced US soldiers demand justice

Comfort women

Growing up in hardship in this once-poor Cold War outpost, the young Kim Kyeong-sun decades ago met a job recruiter who promised her housing and a paycheck to support her family. Her real job? A sex worker for American GIs.
In a former neon-lit shantytown right outside an army base entrance, the hostess eked out a living flirting and trysting with soldiers who rotated in and out of South Korea. Descending into a life of hard drugs and debt, she sought a way out through marriage with a customer. Nuptials with American servicemen were a common escape from indentured sex servitude, she recalled.

Facebook Testing Self-Destructing Messages

Facebook posts autodestroying
Facebook is testing a new feature which lets users post self-destructing messages which disappear after a set period of time. The feature is being trialled with a limited number of users, some of whom spotted it on their iOS apps earlier this week.
After the next web technology site contacted Facebook, the social network said: "We're running a small pilot of a feature on Facebook for iOS that lets people schedule deletion of their posts in advance." Facebook is letting users opt to show their posted message for a period of between one hour to seven days, after which it disappears from public view. After that, Facebook's servers take up to 90 days to delete the data from offline backups and logs.

Russia will embrace Apple's iPhone 6 even if it's late and costs more

Apple in Russia

Although Apple's new iPhone 6 won't hit Russian shelves until a week after its U.S. launch — on Sept. 26 — and will be around $200 dollars more expensive when it does, that is a breathtaking record for a country used to huge delays and massive mark-ups on Apples' high end gear, according to one of Russia's largest smartphone retailers.
Sergei Tikhonov, spokesperson for mobile retailer Svyaznoi, said the one-week gap is a record for Russia: "3 to 4 years ago ... the official start of Apple sales in our country took place about 4-5 months after the world premier [of a new iPhone]. Now ... it is a little more than two weeks." Apple this week unveiled its upgrade to the massively successful iPhone family with larger screens to compete with Android-based competitors that have lured customers away from small-screened Apple by selling roomier phones. For the first time in iPhone's history, it will be sold in two sizes — 4.7" and 5.5". The standard iPhone screen size has previously been 4".
When they do arrive, Russians will bow to tradition and pay more than their U.S. peers, despite on average earning 57 percent less, according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The standard iPhone 6 will cost anywhere from 32,000 rubles ($860) to 42,000 rubles ($1,130), as compared to the $650 to $850 price range in the U.S. The average monthly salary in Moscow is about 57,000 rubes ($1,800) rubles per month. Nationwide, it is about half that.

Mercedes-Benz launches Rescue Assist QR codes

New Mercedes service

The German car company is officially rolling out a brilliantly simple system that will help fire, police and ambulance crews access critical information about a car when arriving on the scene of an accident. The stickers in question are QR codes that when scanned by a smartphone or tablet will identify the exact model of car, where its airbags, batteries and high voltage cables are located and the optimum points for cutting the vehicle open and safely extracting occupants if the accident is serious.
Mercedes revealed it was working on the system, called Rescue Assist, back in May 2013 and at the time said it hoped to bring it to new and existing cars in its range by 2015. It also revealed that it had waived any rights to patent the idea in the hopes that other car companies would follow its lead and introduce the stickers to their own vehicles -- echoing the gesture made by Volvo when it invented the three-point seatbelt, a device estimated to have saved over 1 million lives since 1959. Two QR stickers are applied to the car, one behind the fuel filler cap and another on the inside of the door frame on the opposing side of the vehicle. The idea is that if a car rolls as the result of an accident, whether it comes to rest on one of its sides or on its roof, the sticker can still be scanned and the relevant information obtained quickly.
At the moment, in order to identify the precise make and model, first responders need to consult a database and, as the internal differences between cars becomes greater and greater, while external differences are disappearing, this can prove time consuming. And, if the car in question is severely damaged as a result of the accident, it could be impossible to say for sure whether it is a Mercedes, BMW or a Ford, yet alone whether it is an E-Class diesel or hybrid with massive battery packs.

Fashion Week wows at World Trade Center for 9/11 anniversary

Fashion week

Thirteen years after the 9/11 attacks, New York Fashion Week made history Wednesday by presenting a catwalk show at the World Trade Center with a stunning collection for Jason Wu at Hugo Boss, AFP reports.
After the romantic elegance of Michael Kors in the morning and much-talked-about group effort by pop diva Miley Cyrus and bad-boy designer Jeremy Scott, Wu unveiled his second collection for Hugo Boss womenswear.
The show unfolded on the 54th floor of World Trade Center tower No. 4, just meters from a memorial honoring fallen firefighters and one day before New York pays tribute to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror hijackings. The spectacular views of New York bay reflected perfectly the refined precision of the clothes in soft yellow, turquoise, lavender, white and black.
The 49 silhouettes combined clear, sharp lines with fabrics of body and structure; subtle geometric patterns in gray, black or white; ultra precise cuts and belted dresses; and sleek lace and embroidery. Inspired by a men's locker room, the classic white shirt was reinvented for evening, worn with a long suede skirt in soft yellow and a satin belt.

Kazakhstan expands Tenge to US Dollar exchange rate corridor

Tenge and USD

The central bank of Kazakhstan has expanded the Tenge to US Dollar pegged corridor from 6 tenge to 18 tenge, Tengrinews reports.

National Bank Governor Kairat Kelimbetov made the announcement in Astana today.

"The decision to change the corridor has been taken literally today. It will be effective as of tomorrow," Kelimbetov said. The Bank  has expanded the pegged corridor from the exiting 185 tenge per dollar +/-3 tenge range to 185 tenge per dollar +3/-15 tenge.
Kazakhstan keeps the exchange rate of its currency in managed float - in a pegged corridor.
The Governor first mentioned the plan to enlarge the pegged corridor last week. He then explained that the expansion would serve to bring the tenge to dollar exchange rate to 181 or even 179 tenge per 1 US dollar, even went as far as assuming that the rate may eventually go down to 170 tenge per 1 US dollar.

The figures are the first released by the central bank since May, which has led critics to accuse the government of withholding data for political reasons. The poor state of the economy, among other issues, triggered mass anti-government protests earlier this year. They have since died down, but many continue to grapple with shortages. The central bank did not publish its scarcity index, a measure of goods that are missing from store shelves, but shortages of basic items such as flour, milk and toilet paper continue to be the bane of many shoppers.
