Augmented reality gives physical world a virtual dimension

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-28399343

Physical objects are often static and dumb, offering little interactivity to the curious observer. Which is why the potential of augmented reality (AR) - virtual enhancement of the physical - is getting business excited. Retailers, advertisers and industry are all now using the technology, which overlays computer-generated content - video, graphics, text, sound or GPS data - on to real-world images captured by smartphones, tablets and hi-tech glasses.
The results can sometimes be startling. Pepsi Max's recent "Unbelievable" ad campaign, devised by agency AMV BBDO, made people waiting at a bus stop think they were seeing marauding giant robots, charging tigers and flying saucers in the street beyond.
The trick was achieved by rigging up a bus shelter in London's Oxford Street with a full HD screen and a camera on the opposite side to create a see-through effect. A live video feed of the street beyond was then overlaid with the animations.

Do quantum computers threaten global encryption systems?

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-27974877

Make a mobile phone call and encryption is there to stop eavesdroppers listening in. Spend money online and encryption ensures your card number and identity cannot be scooped up and used elsewhere. And the money that keeps global banking systems lubricated only does so thanks to cryptographic software that turns a stream of data into unintelligible nonsense.
Remove all that encryption and the whole lot comes tumbling down.
If that happens we might return to an era when commerce was mostly done face-to-face and based around who you know.

China to need more than 6,000 new planes by 2033: Boeing

China and Boeing

China will need more than 6,000 new aircraft over the next 20 years, US manufacturer Boeing forecast Thursday -- an increase of almost 500 on its equivalent prediction last year.
Flight demand in the world's most populous country and second-largest economy is increasing and diversifying, Boeing said in its new Current Market Outlook for the country. Chinese new aircraft demand will reach 6,020 planes worth $870 billion during the 2014-2033 period, it said, compared to last year's 20-year demand forecast of 5,580 planes. Underscoring the dramatic increase in passenger demand, Boeing said that a total of 6,930 passenger aircraft will be plying China's skies in 2033, three times the current 2,310.

Study: travelers overlook hotels without photos

Hotels overlooked
To attract tourists online, hotel owners should start by providing plenty of photos of the rooms, lobby and facade, according to a study conducted by TripAdvisor.
Among the factors most likely to engage potential hotel guests on a TripAdvisor.com page, photos top the list. And the more images there are, the higher the likelihood travelers will remain on the page to find out more about the property. In fact, TripAdvisor points out that hotel and B&B pages with photos receive 138 percent more engagement from the website's users.
Even more encouragingly, the number of reservation requests made through these illustrated pages was 225 percent higher than for those without photos. TripAdvisor users also tend to be drawn in by a high number of reviews, as this factor ranks second in determining online engagement. Here once again, more reviews tends to mean that users stay on the page for longer. Of course, it's all the better when the reviews are positive and have been published within the past 12 months.
